For Wine Lovers: All About Corked Wine

Black Star Farms Winery
Last week I purchased my first bottle of corked wine.  Any wine lover knows that this is not a good thing.  At first, I wasn't really sure what the problem was.  The wine didn't have that beautiful fruity smell that it promised on the bottle, rather, it smelled like a moldy nursing home.  After doing some research, I realized that my wine was corked--tainted! And apparently, it happens quite often.

In order to save you, friends, from drinking a tainted bottle of wine, I am going to share the information I learned from my research.

First, it might be helpful that you know that any "tainted" wine contains TCA.  TCA (I will spare you the long scientific name), is a chemical substance.  Corks that are meant to keep wine fresh can be contaminated with this chemical.

Wondering how this happens?  Ah, I thought you would never ask!

It is pretty complicated but let's just say that phenols in cork tree bark react with fungus or mold when introduced to chlorine (this happens for several reasons and would require a post all on its own. So just trust me).  This fungus or mold produces TCA.  You can usually tell if your wine is "corked" by the aroma. Almost anyone can detect it, once you know what you are looking for.  Wines with TCA can range from smelling like nothing at all to a wet cardboard box or even your grandma's spare bedroom that hasn't been used in 25 years.  When you smell it, you will know it.

Fortunately this doesn't happen too often if you rarely purchase a bottle of wine, but regular wine drinkers have found that 1%-3% of bottles are corked.  That is pretty high.  TCA won't hurt you, but it ruins the wine, and will generally taste pretty gross.  Learning to sniff out a corked wine will only benefit you.  So next time, take a whiff before you take a sip.  You are one step closer to being a wine expert friends.

Anyone can do it :) Even my sweet husband-- (who would most likely be alarmed if anyone accused him of being a wine expert)! He is going to have to deal with me shoving glasses of wine in his face and demanding "Is this wine corked?!  I could swear it's corked..."  from now on.  Bless his heart.

  5. I cannot believe that I grew up in Northern Michigan and still have not been to any of the Traverse City or Leelanau Peninsula Wineries!

Good thing that you learned about corked wines... they sound like they smell disgusting! 1-3% is kind of a lot... thanks for telling us how to know if our wine has been corked or not. (:

  9. This sounds horrible! I didn't even know this could happen! I am so glad you informed us about this, Ashley. I could imagine myself drinking tainted wine and merely thinking "well, maybe it's SUPPOSED to taste gross" because I am certainly no wine expert! Lol.

Can you return the wine? It seems unfair you paid for something that is undrinkable.

  10. Ok so now this makes total sense! I have opened a few bottles of red wine (my absolutely favorite) and it was just gross! So gross that I had to throw the whole bottle away, well now I know why. Thanks for the info!

  14. Loved your comment you left on another blog aboout real friends being over-rated and you made me laugh & I love what I've read of your blog so far but I'll NEVER be able to have one like this! I just began blogging & have to give it up but steal time here & there to read them. I KNOW you were joking about real friends, though! Mine ARE MY LIFE~!! Right now I'm in big trouble while waiting on a plane to come take us from Houston (where I live) out to a very big wedding in which my dad will give away the bride for his brother who's no longer alive. So sad but glad my dad can and will love doing it. Hope you'll stop by and read my garbage-like (or worse) blog! Hey, I have NO BLOGGING SKILLS WHATSOEVER-won't take you long to figure that out-and people are so nasty and hateful about my life and how I am deciding to run it. And most were my family!! Nice, eh? Well they meant well & at least I knew that but still...get a grip people!! I'm almost 25 and can figure out what I can and cannot do-and don't want my family telling me what to do & not do! Rahter have unbiased people's opinions!

Gotta run. Now boarding the plane in a couple of minutes-pray they don't have an earthquake in Ca before we get back home late Mon night! Thanks and hope you'll read my blog-good for a laugh anyway. Kinda. Gotta read from the beginning to understand the grumpy people and hateful me-comments I had to put up for certain people! :) Had to delete them and think only my parents and lil sis are reading what I've poste so far and that's ok! Gotta run-ooops now gonna get my phone taken away if I don't stop using it and fiance is not happy with me for 1st time cos I shouldn't have my phone out! lol Ok-he's fine now..
    bye
