Meet Our New Puppy!

Sometimes I get these ideas i my head...
and then I can be pretty stubborn about them.
Even though have talked about getting a puppy  we haven't TRULY considered it.
Until Sunday.

I decided I wanted a puppy.
Monday I searched for one.
Tuesday I found one, and brought it home.

Meet our new baby:
First puppy groom & trim!
She still doesn't have a name, so any suggestions would  be great!
Also, last night she had some separation anxiety and cried and cried.
I felt so bad I got up at 4am and slept with her on the couch.
Any tips for helping them get through this tough period?
Any potty training tips?
I need all the help I can get!

*p.s.:  this puppy was not purchased from a breeder, for those of you who were so adamantly against it!

Also, the little baby is already getting a case of the spoiled rottens...
She loves sleeping right up against our faces.
Please note my husband's ear plugs on the night stand.
(Her squeaky whines made me laugh but after a while we did have to use the ear plugs!)

  2. She's so sweet! Our puppy (Charlotte) had bad separation anxiety at first...my husband had to sleep on the floor by the crate her first night. She's just unsure of her surroundings right now and wants to make sure she's not alone when she wakes up.

As for potty training, we just took her out ALL. THE. TIME. until she got used to the door she was supposed to go out of. And when she did go in the house, we would scream and yell so it scared her and made her stop. Then we would rush her outside. Keep some treats outside and say, "Good potty" so she associates it. Eventually she just got it.

Sounds inhumane, but it works. But never use the crate as punishment. Makes her hate it.

PS - Charlotte doesn't sleep in the crate anymore...she now takes up 1/3 of the bed...

  3. Soo cute! Try putting your dirty clothes where you want her to sleep. She'll like the smell of you and it will comfort her. I have also heard of people putting a clock in the area so it reminds her of a heart beat. Good luck!

  4. I am dying! Like want to jump through the computer screen to pet that sweet little baby!!!

My dog is amazing but technically he is my mom', and I totally want my very own.

Our dog's name is Bryan...like from family guy.... I had nothing to do with naming him and resisted it at first, but now I love it. So much better than a cutesy name.

    she is sooo pretty!!!

  5. Wow, that took no time at all!

She looks like a Kayleigh to me. Although I've always wanted a dog named Kayleigh.

Our kittens the first night cried and cried and kept us awake ALL night, but within 2 days they had completely stopped, except when they couldn't find one another under the bed!

  7. How cute! What breed is she?

    Some tips:
Gracie has separation anxiety--the first night was rough. We heard that if you put a blanket over the crate so they can't see out, it helps. It did. We still put a blanket over her cage. If she whines, just ignore it. It's hard, and sad--but that's how she learns.

Praise her for good behavior, ignore the bad.
If she pees on the floor, take her outside immediately, ignore the accident--praise her when she potties outside. If you catch her peeing--say NO! And pick her up and run her outside.

  11. dying!!!! i love her.

uhm collin and i did everything wrong with Bear...even though we said we would never be those people. we didnt crate him (we tried and he would bust out of it and poop on the floor to spite us...and threw up in it at night cuz of anxiety...) we caved and let him in the bed, had a horrible time trying to potty train (potty training a puppy when u live on the fourth floor of an apt complex is not a good idea)

now that i know better..i am a supporter of the crate method..taking out all of the time. especially after they eat or drink. reward when they go outside. i dont believe in punishment for accidents. just a sharp NO should do the trick. (my husband would disagree)

    reward reward reward.

    bear is a dream now.

  12. Awwww I love! I like the name doodad. Haha. Totally kidding. Crate train like crazy is all I can say. I'm STILL potty training my dogs and it's been two years. I'm no expert on the subject lol.

  14. WHEEEEEE!!! SOOOOOO cute!!! I love her! Names are tough, but give her a few days, and once her personality starts to show, you will find the perfect name for her!

Potty training tips: take her outside EVERY TIME she eats/drinks/wakes up. Praise and treats for going outside. Don't scold her if she goes inside, just grab her quickly and take her outside. You don't want her to associate either of you with punishment!

I second the comment about giving her dirty clothes to sleep on. It will help her learn your smells and make her more comfortable :) GOOD LUCK!!!

  15. A good thing for separation anxiety for the pup, is to get a big stuffed animal, thats about as big as a "mother" would be. Place it where she sleeps and eventually she'll sleep with it. My dog stillll sleeps with the stuffed animal I bought him.

And pottty training, take her outside on a leash and keep her focused on going potty. Use key phrases when talking about potty so she can distinguish between outside bathroom time and just outside play time. Give her a treat immediately after she goes potty.

    Good luck, she's adorable!

  16. Oh my! That puppy is adoorrrable! The separation stage is the worst :( So sad!
And my husband sleeps with ear plugs...we have no babies, no puppies, and I don't snore. Haha I don't understand why he needs them?!

  19. Oh my gosh! too cute! Cruz cried the first few nights for sure...broke my heart. Bring her outside, lots to pee and when she has an accident inside, bring her outside so she starts to learn that's where you go...good luck and enjoy!

  20. OMG SHE IS SO CUTE!

The puppy days are rough! I have a goldendoodle (Ellie) who took forever to get housebroken (forever translating to about three weeks-month). Ellie was great in that she always slept through the night, though! My golden retriever was the exact opposite- a quick learner for housebreaking but would whine and cry all night long! She stopped doing that once we let her sleep outside her cage. Thank gosh they are SO adorable during the puppy days because they're so much work! :)

I love dog names. Ellie's name is Eleanor May after Eleanor Roosevelt and because she was born in May (I know, way too much thought went into that haha). Names I love are: Rory, Daisy, Luna (especially if your're a Harry Potter fan), Lily, Cece, Coconut, Rosie... etc, etc... I could go on for ages.

    Congratulations !!!

  21. Awww oh my goodness so precious!! My favorite names are: Missy, Puppy, Sofie, etc.

My 3rd puppy, a yorkie had seperation anxiety TO THE MAX. And still does. The only time I saw progress was when we just let him sleep in his kennel throughout the whole night even though he was crying. After that one night, he got the message that crying doesn't = attention. We tried to only give him attention when he's not whining so he learns but we felt so bad that we always let him out! haha Now he still has that seperation anxiety after 5 years grrr. And it's not cute anymore!!

With the potty training, just make sure you wake up early to let her out.

    Good luck and congrats!

  29. I really appreciate all of these comments and tips! I have been working really hard to teach her the word potty and giving her lots of loving when she goes outside. I am just taking her out allll the time.

She also whined a lot less last night, I am wondering if it is because she has to go to the bathroom. But what do I do, get up and take her outside at all hours of the night?!
