With all of our traveling, husband and I had YET to be out to Lake Michigan.
And if you live in Michigan, you know what a travesty that is.
We got to fix that though, and catch up with a good friend this past Sunday in Holland.
Yep. Holland, Michigan. Home of wooden shoes and tulips.
And a lovely state park beach---
The water this year has been very rough, two weeks ago almost 30 people were rescued
from massive waves and undercurrents and a handful of people died.
You see, you are NOT supposed to go into the water when they put a red flag up on the beach.
Do you think my husband or his daredevil college buddy payed any attention to the flags?
Here, let me show you what I am talking about--
The below photo shows the beach at a yellow flag-- still pretty rough.
The under currents are crazy strong, even the most seasoned swimmers can get into trouble fast.
(Yes, I watched a news demonstration about this and am now an expert. DUH)
And here is dumb and dumber (husband and his friend) purposely swimming out, jumping into the waves and riding them back in. Do you think my butt went out that far? Heck no. I am smart, and I am going to live to a ripe old age. These two (and husband's friend FOR SURE) are going to die by shark attack or something equally as insane. I guarantee it.
And here is another picture of them. See that shark fin coming out of the water?
Just kidding. It's a sail boat.
So at this point, if you are with me, you are probably thinking these guys are a little insane.
WELL. It gets worse. As if this weren't dangerous enough, they decide to go pier jumping.
HMMM...that seems smart! Let's jump off a pier with massively strong waves that could toss us back against the rocks and concrete and split our skulls open. Sound fun? ALRIGHT!
(I am speaking in jest, a little. This WAS dangerous but both guys are smart about it and very strong swimmers who have grown up doing this their entire lives. I would never attempt this, but, confession: I also cannot swim.)
Pier that the boys jumped from...
A before picture in case one of them died....
And I have to point out my poor husband--- because of my lupus I have to wear 70+ sunblock, and usually he just puts on whatever I have with me, thus, no tan. poor guy. But good husband. If I have to be pale, he is going to be pale with me. :)
And let the jumping/diving/flipping begin.
Doesn't this make you a little nervous? Or is it just me...?
This is my favorite picture----
minus husband's wal-mart swimming trunks
that we had to buy 10 minutes before we got to the beach.
The survived the crazy pier jumping and then we went to enjoy some ice cream!
Here are a few more shots from the day!

I have never been to Lake Michigan either...and we live so close in Northern Indiana! Between buying a house and moving-our summer has been spent doing other things! Maybe next year we will make it up to the dunes, it looks beautiful in your pictures! Though, I would NOT jump of the pier!

ReplyDeleteoy. I'm with ya.. I hate watching people jump off things into the water.. it makes me super nervous, no matter what.. even watching them jump into swimming pools! I just envision slipping and cracking heads open and stuff.. but does Lake Michigan really have sharks in it? Crazy!!!
ReplyDeleteHow scary! I live in Southern California and am a sissy when it comes to waves and riptides. I literally go to my waist in the water and that's it.

Oh goodness this day looks perfect! Minus the sailboat shark and crazy waves. You documented it perfectly.
ReplyDeleteoh wow.. i didn't know the lake could get that rough! that would definitely make me nervous too! boys haha
ReplyDeletei realllly like the sailboat shark.. i actually like it a lot more since it's a sailboat and not really a shark!
What a fun time on the beach! We don't have many "great" beaches in Cleveland, or really around Lake Erie actually. But I do like being so close to a body of water with a beach :) And those guys are ca-ray-zay jumping off that thing!
ReplyDeletethese pictures are great! i laughed at your commentary about your husband and his friend... sounds just like me! so funny. and im glad everyone made it out alive. haha!
ReplyDeleteLooks like SUCH fun. I've never been to lake Michigan, or any lake that had anything resembling a beach for that matter. Happy adventures!
