Well friends, we had a very fun weekend, did you?
It was EXTREMELY windy but the sun was hot and we even made some friends.
I knowwwwwww!

We headed down to a street fair called "Territory Days" which wasn't as thrilling as the advertisements promised. BUT we still got to eat BBQ bison and have snow cones, pan for gold and do some great people watching.  Sunday we tried another new church and found a great group of young marrieds. Memorial day we headed to a barbecue they were having.  We had a great time and met some awesome people.  (I even met a vet that I am going to have do Bella's surgery to get spayed!)  We are so glad to finally have found a good group of people that we can call friends during our time here in Colorado.

I have a feeling this week is going to hold a LOT of adventures for the husband and I...I recently found a ton of great hiking trails, one called "the incline" where you gain 2,000 feet in elevation climbing it (eek!) and a handful of other really cool sights to see.  Check back this week for pictures!

Here are some snapshots from Territory Days...
hope you guys had a great holiday weekend!

getting rich.... well, not quite...

bella found a cowgirl hat she wanted, but we said NO. :)

and then bella drove us home..

she was an extremely alert driver....

Dear Bella, I am trying to teach you how much fun water is.  It is for jumping and splashing, not just drinking and staring at.  Oh well, at least you looked cute (if not a little ridiculous) in your swimsuit.  We will try again this weekend!  Yes, I bought my dog a baby pool. Shaped like a whale. And a bathing suit. So what?! Dear Husband, who needs Apple store when I have you to erase and restore my hard drive so I don't have the annoying rainbow pinwheel anymore?  Thanks for being smart enough to maintain our electronic devices. Dear New Etsy Shop of Mine, I am getting really excited about all the product I am stocking up on so I can officially open you.  Stay tuned friends!  Dear New Job, you are paying me minimum wage with commission.  I hope I can sell enough clothes to make you worth my while. We'll see.  Dear J Slater, I can't wait to "mine" for gold and watch old west gun shoot outs with you at territory days.  Hope we can learn Indian dances and NOM on funnel cakes and BBQ.  Yesss.

Hope you guys have a great weekend,
I am also taking questions for a post next week.

Good Form Running & Running Tips!

Thursday, May 26, 2011

More than one of you have asked me for running tips since I attended the Good Form Running Clinic at Gazelle Sports.   If you live in the midwest, you can find a Gazelle, if not I am sure you can find a local store in your area that does this clinic.  (Good Form Running is put on by New Balance, FYI!)  At the clinic each person is filmed running in shoes and running barefoot.  Remarkably, in running shoes every single person runs incorrectly and once they run barefoot, everything corrects itself.  That is because running incorrectly in bare feet really HURTS; it results in shin splints, IT Band, foot problems, etc.  AND these injuries can all be avoided.  If you just learn to run the right way.  SO, what is the right way?
****

*these tips had me PAIN FREE, no shin splints within two weeks.

1. POSTURE:   A lot of time as we get tired and further into a run we tend to creep and bend forward.  DO NOT DO THIS.  Keep you back straight, head up and eyes on the horizon.  This keeps the rest of the body moving as it should and prevents neck and back pain.   Like the above poster says, if you feel like you have slid forward take a minute and reach as far above your head as you can and then bring your arms back down= you should be re-set into the correct position.

2. FOOT PLACEMENT & CADENCE:  Heel striking is a common (nearly everyone at the clinic I attending did this).  Heel striking is the equivalent to taking a drumstick and pounded it on the table, essentially when you land on your heel you are shocking your bone up to your knee, like the drumstick and shaking the life out of your muscle.  This is when the muscle begins to tear away from the shin, resulting in shin splints.  You can also damage your knee and achilles doing this. It also slows you down significantly.  Think about it--when you go to slow down you run on your heels.  If you are heel striking you are slowing yourself down with each step and forcing your body to work that much harder.   In order to correct this you can think of two things.  ONE:  brush your foot underneath you like a bull getting ready to charge.  Do you feel where your foot is touching?  It should be touching the ground right in the midfoot towards the tip.  This is where you should aim to land. SECOND:  Increase your cadence.  Longer strides aren't always better.  Increasing the pace or quickening your step forces you to land on the correct part of your foot, you don't have the time to extend that foot and slam down your heel.

4. LEAN: Once you are running if someone were to snap your photo, you should have a distinct lean. Why?  Simple- you should be using gravity to help pull you along. Why do more work than you have to?  Watch this video of Olympic runners... they have a lean and are using the force of gravity to propel them forward, reserving energy and taking performance to a whole new level.

Finally, you should watch your arm movement.  Think "Nip to Hip"...  your arms shouldn't cross over the center of your body (don't try and propel your body forward with your arms, it wastes energy and that is about it)....   A fun fact:  your legs mirror your arms, so when you are practicing  moving your arms from your nipples to your hip area, your legs tend to move better as well.  Your hands should be in a relaxed fist, and one trick to keep those arms from crossing over is to place your thumb on the top of the fist and point outward. It is also really important to be running in the right shoe with the right support.  Find a store in your area that will watch you walk/run and fit you in the correct shoe. Check the return policy as well, a legit show store should let you bring back your shoes if they aren't working out for you!  I know this is a LOT to think about while running, and you should really just begin my cycling through the list in your mind every 30 seconds or so and eventually your body will   start  remembering it and take over.  Trust me!

Not A Great Day For America

Okay, I have been waiting a bit to post this because, for one I wanted the hype to die down enough for everyone to reflect thoughtfully on their real feelings about the whole thing. The thing I am talking about is Osama Bin Laden's death at the hands of American soldiers.  Back when the news broke I was right there with everyone else, celebrating the end to a very evil man's ability to destroy innocent lives.  I was cheering and fist pumping to Toby Keith's America song and saying how glad I was that he was dead.  Then, I started to see a few comments on friends facebook pages that kind of made me cringe a little bit... comments like "we should have cut him up into pieces and fed him to the pigs" and "I want to see osama's head on a stake at the site of the world trade center!" and etc.  I started to rethink my own rejoicing in the death of this man.  And not just Osama in particular, but rejoicing at DEATH at all.  That is when I read a friend's post about the whole situation.  He puts it a lot more eloquently that I could, so I am posting below.  I hope you will read, regardless of your thoughts and just think about what is being said.  I know this is a little deep for my little blog, but I think it is important.  Afterwards, visit Dan's Blog for some great insight on a number of other subjects...

***

The news broke last night. Announcements of an upcoming important press conference had everyone speculating. President Obama would be speaking, but about what?

We were then informed that Osama bin Laden had been killed. An intelligence tip led the US military to a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where an ensuing brief firefight found bin Laden dead, having been shot in the head. The US supposedly took possession of his body and later buried him at sea.
In the aftermath of Obama’s announcement, people all across the country began to gather and celebrate. American flags waved as cheers and chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A! ...” rang out over the sound of people reciting the pledge of allegiance and singing the Star-Spangled Banner. Videos from Ground Zero and the White House flooded the social networks and the news. Certainly this country was jubilant and proud that one of the top missions for the past decade had finally been completed.

And this is when my heart sank.

The more I've read and seen, the worse I've felt. Go to any article online about bin Laden's death and you'll find comments similar to these (taken from the comment section below a CNN.com article, spelling and grammatical errors kept in tact):

Hard to face Mec ca when you're spinning around on the ocean floor! Beautiful!

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A VIDEO OF HIS DEATH AND VIDEO OF HIM BIENG CUT INTO PIECES AND THROWN TO THE SHARKS PLEASE

FInally, to the one man who just devastated the image of Muslims and Arabs to the world, go burn in hell you murderer!

God Bless America!!

Well the stock exchange is doing better for the killing of that piece of crap I guess we should be asking the stock exchange who we should kill next to make the market better!

I lost 2 of my best friends over in Afghanistan because of Osama bin Laden and I'm glad he's dead just like the rest of Al-Qaeda will be very soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Should have poured some pig blood on it, then shipped it back to New York so it could be slapped in the face with shoes and spit upon.

about time we got that monster, and yet i'm kinda jealious at the same time.i wished in a way it was me that pulled that trigger that rid the world of him

I hope the Sharks have a feast dear friends of ours lost their beautiful Daughter in 9/11 I do not hate people but this one Justice was served.

America Rules! Osama didn't stand a chance. Get Some MARINES!!!

Thank you CNN. "Breaking News" says USA has the DEAD body of 0sama Bin Laden. Bring out the champagne. Party time! Rot in hell Osama. Hahahah

Watch the Mets-Phillies game on ESPN. The whole crowd is chanting "USA! USA! USA!"

finally someone killed this murderer.

rot in Hell you Monster

Now let's bury him with a pig!!

USA.,we are the best !!!!!!!!!! Yeah

I hope it was a long, drawn out and painful death.

AMERICANS! DANCE IN THE STREETS THE WAY THEY DID ON 9/11!!!

I will not debate that Osama bin Laden was a terrible man, and one responsible for the loss of many innocent lives, but the response that has been seen in America, as shown in the above comments, is disheartening on many of levels. Here are a couple of the larger issues I see emerging.

There Is No Pleasure In Death
First is the jubilant celebration that is happening over his death. I will certainly rejoice that many lives were likely saved. The protection of life is something worth pursuing and I only see it appropriate to take a life in dire circumstance. A time when it is appropriate would be when a person takes the lives of innocent people, refuses to change, and violently resists arrest or incarceration. In this situation we are forced to take desperate measures and perhaps kill, but such a task should be approached with a remorseful, somber, and humble heart. It should never bring joy.

Ezekiel, a prophet, tells us the story of the Word of the Lord coming to him. In this message, God tells of the imminent destruction coming to Israel, but says repeatedly that He takes "no pleasure in the death of the wicked" or anyone else (Ezekiel 18:23, 18:32, and 33:11). For followers of Christ, our goal is to align our hearts with God’s heart. If His heart takes no joy and finds no pleasure in the death of the wicked, why should we be any different?

True Biblical Perspective
Many people are celebrating that "justice" or, even worse, "God's justice" has been served. I find this to be an extreme distortion of what the Bible proclaims. First of all, it is a bold and dangerous claim to say that the actions of the US Army exact the justice of God. If you truly believe this, there are some far deeper theological issues that we need to address. Second, the Bible, specifically the New Testament is filled with a message of redemption and restoration. Not for some, not for the almost pure, not for those who haven't screwed up too much, but for EVERYONE. God's love and grace has no limits. It applies the same way to Osama bin Laden as it does to me and to you.

Undoubtedly, people will point to the Israelites and the Old Testament for an example of “God’s justice” and to passages where God is on Israel's side as they are engaged in wars with other nations. The problem here is that circumstances were drastically different. God was specifically directing an entire nation and leading them through purposefully placed leaders and prophets. He hasn't been in the habit of operating in that manner since Jesus died to offer salvation for everyone, not just a specific people group. This means we need to look more to Jesus than to a nation that repeatedly failed and was brought into captivity by God as a result for a moral example of how to live our lives.

Christ, fully man and fully God, came to earth specifically to set the record straight. He came to offer the infinite grace and love of God to everyone. Not just to the healthy, but to the sick. To those with terrible pasts, to those who think they are unlovable, and to you and me. Jesus faced many situations in which people could have been condemned according to the old law, but not once does He do it. He never condemns. Instead, he loves us, offers second chances, and reminds us that we are not perfect either.

Paul writes in Romans that the wages of sin is death, that all have sinned, and that all sins are equal. We say it all the time, but do we actually embrace the reality of it? It means that passing judgment, failing to do the good you ought to do, hoarding material possessions, gossiping, slander, sexual immorality, lust, pornography, etc. are on the same plane as murder and hatred. That means that our continual battles with these things that we think petty make us no better than bin Laden. God has placed an obvious price tag on our sins, a tag that we can't pay. But Christ came down and bought us with His own blood. For everyone. God loves Osama bin Laden every bit as much as you and me. Difficult to swallow? Perhaps. True? Absolutely. And the same thing that is tough to swallow is the very thing that should be a great source of hope.

America the Self-Absorbed
The last problem on display in the aftermath of bin Laden’s death is the extreme pride, ignorance, and arrogance shown by the American people. We tend to see ourselves and our country as the proverbial “golden child.” We think we are incapable of doing anything wrong, let alone being on the same level as someone like bin Laden. But what if we really step back and see ourselves from an unbiased perspective?

I have been fortunate to travel outside of America’s borders and learned a lot as a result. One of those things is that the rest of the world seems to have a better idea of what America is doing than its own citizens do. They keep up with our foreign policy, where we have troops stationed, what laws our government is passing, and who the people are in power. We can’t even point to their country is on a map (this is not an exaggeration - before going to New Zealand, most people I talked to had absolutely no idea where it was). As a result, we have no idea just how much the rest of the world is frustrated with out foreign policy, no idea that we aren’t well-received everywhere around the globe. Worse yet, when we’re informed of that, what is our response? “Well, we’re the greatest country in the world, so f*** them.” Awesome.

It is precisely this attitude that has made so much of the world upset. We take what we want from who we want when we want it, and we ask nobody for permission. Have we even for a second considered that there may have been a reason for the 9/11 attacks? That at some point, perhaps we did something to enrage an entire people group? Perhaps we had, dare I say it, ourselves to blame? We keep a military presence is too many countries to keep track of, leave behind a trail of destruction, and have the blood of countless thousands on our hands. All the while, we complain about gas prices and our greed allows millions to die every year while we drive nice cars and by expensive houses. We don’t give a second thought to those dying of hunger and preventable illnesses as we spend $25 on a meal, but when 3,000 working, middle to upper class Americans die and we are outraged. For just a moment, step back and imagine what this must look like to the rest of the world. No, those people didn't deserve to die, but they also weren't any more valuable than every other life that we take or simply allow to die and goes unnoticed. America, put down your pride. It needs to die. There is an entire world out there that would be better off if we would.

Finally, the joy expressed at bin Laden’s death shows once and for all that we are no better than him. We are caught red-handed, practicing the same carelessness with life about which we were supposedly righteously angry. I understand that he needed to be stopped. I understand that since he refused and resisted being taken into custody, there was no other option than to use force. But such actions should be taken with a remorseful, somber, and humble attitude. The task of ending a life should never be a point of pride or joy; never lead to saying, “Look what we did!” And yet that is what we do, unknowing pointing to a mess that we have created that does not end with bin Laden’s death. We hope to find “justice” or peace in it, but the only thing strong enough to overcome evil and bring peace is love. There was only one death that could ever bring peace, and it is celebrated every Easter. Until we learn these truths and begin to choose love and forgiveness over vengeance, over violence, and over pride, we will continue to pay the price for our sins. For those following after God’s heart, today was a not a day of celebration, but of weeping.

Manitou Cliff Dwellings

Are you ready for our weekend adventures (part 2)?!  Me too but first I want to tell you that I got a part-time job here.  Mostly because my husband was pushing me too, but also because it will be a great way to make some friends, have something to do, and make a little extra cash.   I am only going to be working 2 to 3 five hour shifts during the week, and that is just plenty for me.  I don't like leaving Bella home ALL day for over 8 hours so this will be just great.  Now let's just hope that I don't HATE it!  Also, we drove up to south Denver last night to meet one of Husband's college buddies/best friends who was in town for work.  We had THEMOSTDELICIOUSUSHI ever.  And that is saying something because I have had more then my share of sushi in a handful of states. Husband's friend, Pecos Bill (I decided to call him that since he is from Texas and his name is Billy) ordered a caterpillar roll and when it came out it was topped with avocado that had been sliced up and it really looked like a REAL caterpillar. It even had antennas. My husband took a picture with his phone so as soon as I get it, I am going to show you guys.  It was crazy.  We also ordered plum sake, which was really good, and little too strong.  We didn't get our food for about 40 minutes and were sipping on the sake and at one point all of us were blinking and slightly swaying and had to switch to water.  Who knew that stuff was so potent?!

Anyways, back to our adventures at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings.... we came here directly from Seven Falls because it was fairly close.  These dwellings are apparently from around 1800.  The Pueblo, or Anasazi Indians  were known to be a community of farmer's and lived on the land until violent/warring tribes entered the area, which is when archaeologists predict they moved into the cliffs for protection.  Eventually the had to abandon their homes due to a drought in the area.

As soon as we pulled up they had teepees set up to walk in.
Bella did NOT want to walk around inside.
No. No. No. Nooo. No. No. Nooo.
We were just "wa-wa-waaaainnng" with our mouths. Not racist at all.
Little fox and running bear.
Entrance

Proof of the altitude!

The cliff dwellings. They had to ruin the view will all the railings! BOO!

Behind me is the ceremonial circle which is set down
in the ground and requires a ladder to get down into...

Husband tried cramming his body into places that he shouldn't.
The Indians were apparently much, much smaller people.
I blame the steroids in the food that is making Americans giants...

He made it in!

These dwellings were cool because unlike others, you could walk into every room,
climb the different levels and really get a feel for how they lived...

It was a really fun trip, but I STILL think Cave of the Winds is going to be so much more awesome.  We also are going to drive down to Mesa Verde, CO soon...it is about two hours away but has dozens of Indian cliff dwellings.  Some require you climb down a 32 foot ladder to get to... scary!  But fun.  We are also thinking of making a trip to the Grand Canyon, but it is 9 hours away. SO we will see!  Hope everyone is having a good Tuesday, and that you all watched the bachelorette last night!  If you read my blog you must watch that show because I am going to be talking allll about it!!!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Seven Falls!

Okay friends, this weekend was the first weekend of beautifully perfect weather that we have had since moving to Colorado Springs.  Of course we wanted to take full advantage and cross more things off our "to do and see" list.  We were going to do the cave of the winds but decided to save that for another day. We wanted to be outside and soak up of the sun while we explored.  We decided on Seven Falls, which everyone says is a MUST see.  Before we left the house though, my husband made a discovery.  It seems that baby Bella has started losing her teeth!   Poor puppy, growing up so fast!

Anyways, within a few minutes we drove into the mountains and the landscape immediately changed from dry and desertlike to lush and green.  (That is the Colorado I remember from my childhood).

Seven Falls Entrance...the mountains are enormous!
After getting parked we immediately took note of the signs alerting us to wildlife...we even saw a vicious chipmunk!  The next picture is of the trash cans in the area.  They are designed to discourage bears from getting into them....   I will let that sink in for you.  BEARS. In the immediate vicinity of where I was walking unarmed and unprepared for a bear attack.  What do you do? Play dead or something?!  Yikes!

bear proof trash cans
Next we walked through the long tunnel to get to the elevator that would take us up to the "Eagle's Nest" which was supposed to give us the best view of the falls...
This tunnel was blasted out and goes through the mountain...pretty cool!

They had little displays throughout the tunnel and one was of wildlife. We think Bella looks just like a fox sometimes!
It was 70 degrees outside but once we got into the tunnel,
and deeper into the mountain it dropped drastically!

And our first view of the falls!
Please note at the bottom left hand corner the people. See how tiny they are? It is REALLY high up!

Each of the drops on the waterfall are named separately but together it gets the name seven falls...
the fall below is called Bridal Veil Falls because that is kind of what it looks like!
I really wanted to jump in and swim...
I wish I could remember the name of this one but alas, I don't.

As we surveyed the are we saw that across the way there was this  little cave in the mountain...and then we spotted fence holding the rocks up so they wouldn't fall on our heads. YEESH!   We took the elevator backed down and crossed over the the stairway you had to take to walk up next to the waterfalls....on our way we spotted an actual chipmunk. I guess I would rather see a bear than a chipmunk, but we'll take what we can get I guess!
Don't mind if I do...

We neared the stairway and the water up close was even prettier...
but the steps to get there? Not so much!

Now that is natural beauty...
We decided to take the 224 step trek to the top....I mean....... it couldn't be THAT bad, right?

Bella is already frightened at the idea of this...
WRONG!  The steps were see through, meaning you could see how
FAR down the fall was!
thanks husband for the unflattering butt shot.
looks like someone will be doing the stair stepper all week. ugh.
And then I decided to look down. NOT A GOOD IDEA!

Finally we made it to the top...only to find a padlocked gate.
Apparently they haven't had time to go and look at the trails at the top.
The snow can cause avalanches and rock slides and can make it very dangerous.
I want to go back once they have cleared the trails..I bet it is so pretty at the top!
Our view was pretty great though, and the water was really pretty.
the puppy didn't like being so high...

 One last look...

trout

And that chipmunk we saw earlier followed us!

The End.

Oh wait, no it isn't the end!  Next we went to Manitou Indian Cliff Dwellings...
check back tomorrow for part two!!

Dear Husband, Whoever stole our credit card/bank information and stole hundreds of dollars really, really sucks.  I think we should launch a private investigation that involves grenades in the perps butt region.  What do you say?  Dear Bella, Today we made an appointment to get you spayed.  It is about a month away and I am already worried about you having surgery.  I guess it is necessary, but...poor poor puppy!
Dear Cave of the Winds, Tomorrow we will go on your Lantern Tour and its gonna be awesome.  I cannot wait to cross another one of Colorado Springs top 10 attractions off our to do list! Dear Readers, see that picture over there of me?  Yeah, sometimes I actually brush my hair and shower.  I know, shocker.
Dear Husband, I played call of duty with you this week.   I bombed people from a plane while you ran on the ground trying to make it to home base.  I think our combined skills are sweeter than 50cal sniper's and killcams.

Oh, what's that?

You are so astounded that I actual out on make-up today that you want more photos?  WELL, okkkkaayyy.

Evidence That Ashley Bathes:

Evidence of a....whats that...weird looking front tooth and big nose?  Let's blame the angle!

Evidence I am a little crazy... oh wait. You didn't need evidence for that!

Um, is this what I look like to drunk people?  Hmm..

Okay, that is more than enough of me.  Gosh, I really must have been out of things to talk about since I put up 5 pictures of myself.  And I am not vain, I just think there should be photographic proof when I spend more than 5 minutes in the bathroom getting ready.
