DITCH THE SODA!
I am not the only one out there that used to have a pretty serious addiction to coke and caffeine. Growing up I could drink 6 cans a day and not blink. I literally lived on the stuff and water wasn't a part of my life in any real way. This didn't matter too much when I was in high school but once I hit about 22 I noticed the more cokes, sodas and sugary beverages I drank, the more my stomach pooched right around my bellybutton, in the once spot I did NOT want it to. The biggest problem is the sugar, for the same reasons white flour is bad for us, sugar is the same. It's not natural, its bathed in chemicals and it wreaks havoc on our bodies. Writer Wade Meredith recently published the progression of 1 can of coke's effects on the body in 60 minutes---
When somebody drinks a Coke watch what happens…
- In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
- 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
- 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
- 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
- >60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
- >60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
- >60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.
So there you have it, an avalanche of destruction in a single can. Imagine drinking this day after day, week after week. Stick to water, real juice from fresh squeezed fruit, and tea without sweetener. If water is just too bland for you, you can always punch it up with sliced fruits, berries, citrus's and mint. Even cucumber tastes nice in water. Slice some stuff up, let it sit overnight and take a big camelbak or water bottle with you. CHALLENGE YOURSELF THIS WEEK TO DRINK AT LEAST 64 ounces of water EVERY DAY this week! Sub your normal sugary drinks and watch the pounds melt off. *tip: if the water is ICE COLD your body will burn an additional 400-600 calories simply warming the water in your body. Win-Win.

Ohh another exercise I love/hate they kill but feel so good afterwards!! I love the detailed pictures. I have never seen anything about the effects of soda like that. We didn't grow up drinking soda, we drank alot of water and I am thankful for that. My husband use to love it but now drinks San Pellegrino mixed with some sort of fruit so he still gets the "bubbles". Haha.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!!! I gave up soda and I thought I wouldnt be able to survive but ya know what...best decision ever! I treat myself every now and then but man, I lost so much extra weight because of it!
ReplyDeleteGreat post again!! Love.
ReplyDeleteI need to give up (diet) soda! I still drink my 64oz of water, but there's usually a soda or two thrown out there.
ReplyDeleteI love this. Its really great information. Please keep it up!

I am totally going to try this workout. It's focusing on my trouble area-thanks! And thanks for posting a recipe. I'm not into seafood of any kind, but I think I might try it and leave it out. Oh and I'm still totally loving your hair.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this post! We decided to not drink soda at the beginning of the year. I haven't had any soda all year :) unfortuntely, being the Southern girl that I am, I can't give up my sweet tea. I put way too much sugar in it but can't help it! Ah. I love all the detailed facts about what it does to your body. Very interesting!!
ReplyDeleteLove the post, Ashley ! And thanks for the motivation to keep drinking water and stay off the coke. :) def needed that today!
ReplyDeletelove the part about soda. so bad for you. ive been trying so hard to drink more water...which I hate!
ReplyDeletethis is such a great post! i love the info on all the soda/water. i had no idea drinking cold water helped so well--no doubt i will be putting my water bottles in the fridge from now on!
ReplyDeleteWoW this is the way to work the lower glutes. As for the soda thing, I stopped drinking "brown" soda's over 3yrs ago. I went to Atlanta & decided I was going to only drink water for the weekend. Needless to say after 2 wks I tried to drink a cherry coke & got this nasty taste & felt sick. I can't really stand rootbeer anymore. So when I do have a soda, rarely, it's either sparkling water, 7up or Fanta Orange. It does take me 3 hrs to drink a 16oz bottle tho. I much rather prefer flavored waters, sparkling or flat.
ReplyDeleteGo YOU! Oh to have a serene green park and warm weather to exercise in! haha
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to have never drink any sodas! I'm trying to rise my son the same way. There are so many diabetics in my family! I drink water, tea and fresh squeezed fruit juices. Have a nice day!!!
ReplyDeleteNice post! I'm trying to get fit right now, myself. You look amazing, so you must know the secret :) Keep it up girlie.

I'm totally trying this exercise. I can feel the burn just thinking about it. HAHA! :)
ReplyDeleteAs for the soda... that really freaks me out! I've never heard it described like that before! I try not to drink pop (maybe once a week) and drink a ton of water each day, but this really makes me not want to have my occasional pop!
I would give my left arm (and maybe right, too) for a good ole coca-cola...
ReplyDeletebut i'm going to make a serious effort to ditch it..
this is going to be a toughy.
I can do this one for sure!! I just love these posts. And I'm already on the no soda bandwagon! Cute headband!!
ReplyDeleteYikes... SO glad I never drink soda!!
