SLOW COOKER BABY BACK RIBS & A MURDERER

I guess, as I endeavor to be pretty  honest here, that it's time for a confession: I've been scared silly living in our new home. Not like in a silly, ha-ha kind of way, but kind of in a legitimately terrified way.  Let me start at the beginning.

Living in a new place always takes a little getting used to, and moving over the past two years I have had to get used to my share of new places.  When we moved into this house, being scared didn't even cross my mind until the first night Jonathan was gone and I was home alone. This was maybe the third night we had been in the house and it was dark and I started to get that creeped out feeling while being alone in our upstairs master bedroom.  I decided to go down and make myself a cup of tea while waiting for him and to shake off the scared feeling. As I was making my way down the stairs I noticed through our huge foyer window that a car was parked facing our house with its lights on.  I had our upstairs lights on, so I knew that whoever it was could see every single move I was making.  I hit the lights off and went into the guest room to peek through the blinds. They sat there for over 15 minutes and that was all it took, I was officially freaked out thinking someone was staking out our home.

Still, I shook it off and headed downstairs to make my cup of tea. When I got the kitchen, I heard something upstairs and Bella started to growl. I headed back up to see what it was and as I was starting to enter our bedroom I saw that the floor fan we had brought was turned ON. Bella ran ahead in the room and turned to face the bathroom (which I could not see into) and started barking her HEAD off like she does when she sees someone she doesn't know. As fast as I could I backed out of the room, into the hallway and locked myself in the guest bathroom with Bella.  I called my husband (thank goodness I had my phone) and as I was telling him about the car and the fan being on, something else happened.... I HEARD THE FAN TURN OFF.  Are you with me here? I heard the fan click OFF!

And with that, I entered full on ugly cry mode begging Jonathan to hurry up and get there because I was about to be offed by an ax murderer.  Eventually he calmed me down and convinced me to open the door and investigate. I didn't find anything but was still freaked out so I went downstairs and grabbed the mace that is hanging on our key rack. I had never used it and the package said to test it out so I turned it to "firing" mode and sprayed it into the sink. It worked, I was satisfied and I started to rinse the sink out with the fumes drafted up and hit me in the face. Immediately my eyes were burning and watering and I couldn't see---at the same time I heard a noise in the basement.  I grabbed a kitchen knife and blindly DASHED up the stairs to the bedroom and locked myself in until Jonathan arrived home. Of course, once he got there, he never found ANYTHING and I am sure it was all a figment of my imagination.

Fast forward to last night.

I was cozied up and tuned into the bachelor finale.  Jonathan had just left for his soccer game and we had just finished dinner. My stomach was bumpin' out so, being home alone, I decided to just take my pants off (don't judge me). Not long after, I started to hear these seriously loud bangs upstairs.  (I guess I should also tell you that our attic is open from the garage entrance over to our master bedroom closet entrance. As far as I knew our garage door lock was broken, so in my mind, I was thinking someone could come in through the garage, enter the attic, walk across and come into our bedroom.  Also, our house has sat empty for a year and every time we came to walk through there would be a pillow moved, or a piece of trash or something weird. I always said to Jonathan that I wondered if the owners of the home had a friend living there sometimes.)   SO, all of this is in the back of mind when I hear what sounds like footsteps above me.  And then the floor creaks the same way it does when someone is standing in the bathroom. And THEN a huge bang, like someone dropped a 5 pound weight. Bella starts to growl, but not just any growl...this low, mean growl. I called my dad, heard the sounds all over again with him on the phone.

He gets freaked out and starts YELLING at me to "GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! GET OUT OF THE HOUSE NOW!" So I jump up, hear more bangs and start running, realize I don't have any pants on so I am trying to get my pants on and explain this on the phone but my dad is still yelling to "GET OUT NOW! NOW! GET IN YOUR CAR AND LEAVE!" Finally, my pants are on, I grab Bella and the mace and open the garage door to find that Jonathan has taken my Escape! His Mustang is in the garage, but its a stick and I cannot drive it! I decide to jump in his car and lock it anyway.  Once I am in I am telling my dad where I am and why and he's saying that I should get out and go into the yard so I try to use the garage door opener in Jonathans car but the battery is dead and I am too scared to get out and go near the house door to push the button open. Bella starts whining and my phone is on 10% battery and I am on the verge of tears. My dad is telling me to call the police, but I don't want to be that crazy person who calls the police because they are hearing the wind or something. So I call my mother in law who lives about 10 minutes away and she says she is coming over.  She gets there, and of course, no other noises happen. And I had been gripping the mace can so hard that some of the liquid had gotten on my fingers and unknowingly I rubbed my eyes and they started burning and watering again. Seriously, I'm a mess.

To make an already long story a little shorter: Jonathan finally arrived home and investigated the attic.  He heard the noises I was hearing too and agreed that YES, he would be freaked out too if he was alone and heard them. It literally sounds like someone is walking upstairs and you can follow the sounds along the ceiling. As I am typing this I have heard them a few times but at least now I know that nothing is up there and we are locked up pretty well.

So  maybe I am just a big baby, but I guess I would rather be silly than to be killed by a deranged suburban murderer, you know? I truly hope this is the last "incident". Maybe I should just not be home alone at night for a while! So, that is my confession.

And now, as your reward for making it through my ridiculous story, I have an awesome slow cooker baby bak rib recipe for you:

Slow Cooker Baby Back Ribs
1 package baby back ribs (I had to cut mine in half to fit into my crockpot)
1 cup kraft honey bbq sauce
1 cup bbq sauce of choice (I used sweet onion hickory)
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup Dale's Steak Seasoning
2 tbsp garlic powder
salt and pepper
Dash of soy sauce
optional: 2 tbsp chili powder for a kick
1 sweet onion, sliced in rings.

Directions:  Mix dry ingredients and rub down baby back ribs on both sides. Slice onion in rings and layer on bottom of crock pot.  Lay ribs on top of onions in the pot.  Mix sauces and all wet ingredients, baste ribs and pour in excess.  If you need more sauce, use more. You can't really use too much!  Set the crockpot on low heat and let cook for 7 hours. Meat will be fall of the bone tender when removed. Once they are remove and serve on plates, basting with warmed BBQ sauce! So good, so easy and SO  much cheaper than buying ribs at a restaurant!

  1. Wow, I seriously had the chills reading your story. I would be scared too! I used to have a problem with irrational fear and 2 Timothy 1:7 helped me through it: God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.

  2. That would freak me out too! hah you're definitely not a big baby.. it never hurts to be cautious!!

  3. OMG I would be freaking out too! I don't blame you at all! Did you ever figure out what is making the noise?

  4. I would have freaked out too! It is hard getting used to a new place and learning it's noises but still...that's above and beyond scary! I'm glad it turned out to be nothing. Now I can't wait to try this ribs recipe. I have a new crock pot & I've been trying to decide on what to cook first.

  5. omg you POOR girl! that is seriously FREAKY!! and it sucks to be scared like that. my hubby works the second shift and i'm home alone at night too. i often get myself freaked out and told him he needs to buy me a louisville slugger so i can creep around our house looking for "serial killers" at night. LOL though, we're in a 3rd floor condo, and know all our neighbors. so the chances of a serial killer are kind of unlikely. (dont tell him i admitted that). but since you guys are in a house, maybe you should look into getting an alarm system if it would make you feel safer... and a gun... and a machete... lmao...

  6. Oh my gosh! That would definitely freak me out too! There have been a few times where I've been home alone for the weekend, hearing scary noises, and have slept with a big butcher knife by my bed. Glad to know I'm not the only wuss out there! Those ribs look amazing... Yum.

  7. Yep, I'm just like you. I hear things and get freaked out. It got worse once I had my first daughter. So bad in fact that we now have a security system throughout our house. It makes me feel so much safer! At least I know the noises now are just the house flexing or whatever, not some strange serial killer coming to get me and my girls.

  8. I'm a nervous wreck just reading this. I live alone, so I'm all too familiar with hearing things and freaking out and calling people! :)

  9. I'm going to have to steal this recipe! Glad you're okay, I hate hearing those noises that go bump in the night. Your mind can really play tricks on you then!

  10. I am the same way!! I would have totally freaked out if I would have heard those noises, so you're not alone in your feelings or the freak out.

  11. I probably would have peed my pants!!!! I hate strange noises that nobody can really explain!!!

  12. Your story scared me, even though I wasn't there!!! So glad everything is okay. And totally agree - don't spend the night alone for a while, at least not until you feel safer and have been in the house a little longer. New places are always a bit unnerving until you get used to them/familiar with the sounds! And good for 'lil Bella for protecting her mommy!

  13. OMG, I got so scared as I was reading the first part of this!! I would be absolutely terrified if that happened to me!! I remember one time I was alone in my uncle's giant house, catsitting while he was on vacation. Throughout the night I kept hearing beeps from the motion sensor security system, and I was convinced that somebody was trying to break in. I ended up turning on all of the lights in the house and stayed awake for most of the night. It turned out to be the cat wandering around in the hallway, which is much better than an axe murderer, but still, noises can be scary!

  14. Omg, I was on edge reading this! I've lived on my own for 5 years now, so I've done a pretty good job at finding reasonable explanations for strange noises, but even *I* was scared while reading this! I'm glad there's nothing in your basement, but I'm curious as to why so much sound comes from there. Strange sounds too. Could it be the wind? Glad you're safe! Your mother-in-law is a sweetheart for coming over. Keep us updated on the weird noises and continue to stay safe!

  15. Ashley!! That is terrifying! I would have acted the same way. I'm so glad nothing was there. But what about the fan?!

  16. I would be terrified, too! Soon after we moved into our new house last year, we heard crazy banging/footstep-like noises in the attic all across the upstairs and I FREAKED. I first thought rodents, but then, of course, my mind went to murderers too and my husband thought I was crazy! Turns out, when we use the water upstairs, it makes loud noises coming through the cold pipes and is the most repetitive "bang bang bang" sound you've ever heard! Totally creepy, but now that I know what it is, I try not to get psyched out over it.

And also I've so done that with the mace in the sink before - hurts like crazy!!! They don't tell you the fumes freaking travel! Haha
Glad you're finally all safe and sound now :)

  17. Oh my gosh! This totally reminds me of something that happened to me years ago, when my family moved into a new house. I was like 14 and I heard PEOPLE walking on the roof in the middle of the night. I was SO terrified, crying, and no one believed me. Turns out, they were huge opossums crawling on the roof in a frenzy looking for their baby opossum. Maybe those are the noises you were hearing?

Nonetheless you are a great story teller. I totally visualized everything you said happened! haha

  18. Wow, Im am extrememly terrified of having my home broken into and being murder! I actually wrote a blog post about how it really affects my life! I don't know what I would have done in your case! And how odd that nothing was found after these two events!!! Im not one to believe in supernatural occurances but this story has me wondering!!! Hope you don't have anymore nights like these!!!

  19. Ah, I'd be totally freaking out, too! I'm so paranoid about things like that...too much Law and Order as a teenager or something!

  21. Did you have your house/attic inspected before you moved? I wonder if there are squirrels or something living up there, I hear its pretty common.

  23. My husband is out of town a lot for business, and I have such a hard time falling asleep when he is gone. I seem to hear every little noise and imagine it to be something like what you described. I also watch too many crime dramas on tv, which feeds into this craziness. :) Those ribs look delicious!!

  24. We moved into an old house last summer and my husband had to leave on business right after we got there-every noise is like 10x louder when you're alone in the dark! I slept on the floor in my boys' room until he got back haha! I don't want to freak you out but maybe it's a ghost! Ok that probably just freaked you out. Shit.

  25. your story gave me the chills! i always jump at the tiniest noises so i am right there with you!

  26. That happened a lot in my parents house growing up. My sister argued it was a ghost (whom she named Kevin) but I always thought it was squirrels (which was confirmed YEARS later). How old is your house? That also makes a huge difference because radiators can make A LOT of noise. But... surprisingly so do small critters.....

  27. I would be freaked out too! I get freaked out with no noise...I watch to my Law & Order I think lol. Glad everything is alright though...even thought the fan thing is still really weird!

  36. Oh, you poor thing! When I was away for college, my parents bought a new house that I was pretty unfamiliar with when I graduated and every noise threw me off. One night I was home alone, ironing and making lunch for work when I heard a banging sound on the glass balcony door. The balcony is on the second floor, up a spiral staircase and I remember thinking that it was weird that my parents would come up the back and that I wouldn't hear the stairs rattling as they walked up. When I walked in the other room, my cat was staring frozen at the door and when I looked at it, I couldn't see anyone. The longer I looked, the more I started to feel like someone was there on the other side of the glass and I couldn't tell because of the glare on it. My heart fell into my stomach and I grabbed my phone and ran UP the stairs, like you always yell for people to never do in scary movies, and I called my dad. I asked him if he was at the back door and he said that he was still out, why was I asking. So I told him what I heard and he told me not to move and he hung up. I then called my mom while I was trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Within minutes, I hear the sound of someone running up the front stairs and I almost died when a man came running into my house. Then he said, It's ____ Police, coming in! My dad had called the police when he hung up and had them sent to the house. Two officers came in the front undercover and four at the back. There were 6 cruisers, most of our force in our small town, at my house. They found nothing. I was beside myself and my brothers found it practically immediately hilarious that I couldn't be left home alone anymore. I still jump out of my skin at every noise and have even called the police myself another time when a man showed up at my door claiming to sell home security, asking if I had a home alarm, when I was home alone. I know this is the longest comment EVER but I felt the need to share my story to tell you that you are not alone. I'm so glad you have your mace! Try to keep some music on or the tv, too, to distract you from listening to every little noise. Hope you start to become more comfortable there soon!

  43. Girl I just nearly peed myself from laughing so hard. Bless your heart. What you are suffering from is what my friends and I affectionately refer to as "preggo paranoia". Stuff like that has happened to me and my girlfriends each and every time we have been pregnant. It makes you feel crazy, but according to my old OB it's actually quite "normal"!!

Also, I wouldn't rule out that you have a family or squirrels or raccoons living in your attic!

  46. Oh my gosh! Seriously.. this is something I do on a weekly basis. Brandon is in a special unit in the Army and is gone from time to time. I'm constantly freaking myself out and calling my dad in a panic. It's always just the ac/heat kicking on, or the dishwasher that I forgot I turned on 10 minutes ago. We have a somewhat large house too.. So when I'm cuddled upstairs in the bonus room and come down for bed, I'm always terrified! We bought and moved into our new home in July.. I promise you get used to the sounds and it will get better. Hang in there momma! ;)

  47. okay, i would be completely freaking out too. there is a (i think) raccoon that has decided to live in our attic and it seriously sounds like someone walking around. a big someone. it freaks me out so much when i am home alone. the only plus side is we have 2 german shepherds and if anyone came in, they would rip them to shreds.

  48. This is hilarious! I had a similar incident a few years ago. My hubby is a police officer and he works night shift every other month, so often I'm at home alone. I'm totally used to it and not generally scared, but one night as I was sitting downstairs in the living room, I heard noises at the back door (which opens up right into the living room). I stopped what I was doing and got really quiet to see if I was just making things up in my head or if I'd hear the noises again. It sounded JUST like someone was trying to break in, but they were trying to be quiet about it. I freaked out, grabbed my phone and keys, and ran out the front door to my car. I called my husband (who was at work across town) and explained the situation. He's very logical so finally I calmed down and went back inside to investigate. I got brave enough to flip on the outdoor lights and peeked out the blinds to discover that.....it was just bugs. Hitting the door. Over and over again. : /
